The Car Scrappage Scheme

Old cars represent a threat to the environment. Ideally they should be scrapped and replaced by newer and more fuel efficient cars. That is why the government have decided to run the car scrappage scheme. If you scrap an eligible car when you buy a new one you will receive a £2,000 discount off the OTR price. Although the idea sounds great, at Scrap Car Wimbledon we believe their are some problems with the scheme. For example, it dictates which new cars you can have in exchange for your old scrap car. Also, the car you are scrapping has to meet the strict guidelines the government has set. We have listed below the government's requirements.

The old car you are scrapping must:

  • Have a UK address on the registration certificate (also known as V5C)
  • Have been registered to you continuously for 12 calendar months
  • Be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or Driver and Vehicle Agency in your name
  • Be a small car or van weighing 3,500 kg or under
  • Have been registered on or before 31st August, 1999
  • Still be insured when you order your new vehicle
  • Have a valid MOT (or within 14 days of expiry) on the old car at the time you purchase the new one
  • Have a valid tax disc when you purchase your new car

As you can see, the requirements for scrapping a car under the car scrappage scheme are rather harsh. Unfortunately, we've seen this lead to a lot of disappointed people in Wimbledon who were hoping to profit from scrapping their car.
